COX MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Cox Memorial Scholarship was established by members of the Bob Cox family to honor those family members who have passed on: Bob Cox, Helen Cox, Gary Wayne Cox and David Cox.
Bob Cox was a graduate of Excelsior High School and served 23 years on the Excelsior and later Butner School Boards. He was on the Board when the three schools, Butner, Cromwell and Excelsior, consolidated in 1960/61. He spent countless, unpaid hours, serving on the School Board so that we could all have a better school. Helen Cox, Bob’s wife, was a graduate of Cromwell High School. Between the two of them they raised seven children who all graduated from Excelsior and Butner. Because of their devotion to family and respect for higher education, all
of their children went on to college and most received two or four year degrees.
Gary Wayne Cox, son of Bob and Helen, was a graduate of Connors State College and Oklahoma State Technical School at Okmulgee. He was a Television Electronics Instructor at OSU Technical School at the time of his death at the age of 33.
David Cox, the son of Robert and June Cox, was also a Butner graduate. He was a college graduate of Oklahoma State University and an avid OSU fan. During his years at Butner High School, he was an FFA State Farmer and winner of numerous state-wide FFA speaking competitions. He was a Delegate to both Boy’s State and Boy’s Nation and served several years as a Counselor to Oklahoma Boy’s State. He served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard for several years. At the time of his death, he was the Sports Reporter for the Seminole
The Cox Family is committed to higher education and is proud to provide this scholarship to help encourage Butner High School seniors to pursue a college degree.
